If you have never attended a meeting of your local fish club
then you may wonder what all the fuss is about. This is a
recount of one night's meeting from the attendee's point of
view. It will give you some idea of what to expect if you are
considering going along.
NSWCS meeting
I attended the September meeting of the
NSW Cichlid
Society.
Overall it was a good night with some interesting happenings.
John Franken gave a talk on discus - while not my cup of tea,
they are lovely fish - but the water changes sound like a
nightmare. Daily?
I’m surprised after all these years in
captivity the discus breeders haven't “bred in” some tolerance of
nitrate.
Additionally, I bought two forum members (Hoges & Fins) to their first ever meeting. I hope it wasn't too traumatic. Last night’s special event was the GIANT fish raffle. Despite it’s name some normal sized fish are up for winning also. I bought $5 worth of tickets and won (31st prize, but who is counting!), just as I was giving up and going home. Of the fish left when I reached the stage Hemitilapia oxyrynchus and “yellow fin mloto” were probably the picks and I finally decided on the mloto. I gave these to BaZ on the way out the door - there’s no room for Haps in a fish room full of Julies.
An enjoyable, if lengthy, evening for all.
